Project Info

Objective

The project is to create a custom drift car chassis design using steel tubes. The below design considerations were followed.

  • The design should look similar to a Toyota AE 86.
  • The total weight of the design should be less than 1500lb (including the driver).
  • Miata 6-speed transmission should be fitted to the design.
  • The driver’s cabin should have an ergonomic design.
  • The wheelbase is around 64 inches.
  • The track Width is around 43 inches.

Solution

  • Designed the chassis design using CAD software.
  • Comprehensive research was carried out on engine transmission and driver ergonomics.
  • Validated through FEA,
    • Front impact analysis
    • Rear impact analysis
    • Side impact analysis
    • Torsional rigidity – Front – (2000 Nm/deg)
    • Torsional rigidity – Back – (2000 Nm/deg)
    • Static vertical bending analysis

Results

  • The final one-piece tuber design was manufactured in the USA.
  • Tested the chassis in real-world track.
  • The client was very happy with the final outcome.
